The Beguiled
Sofia Coppola is considered to be a very autonomous director, always finding new genres to explore. She received the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for 'Lost in Translation', and directed a historical drama about Marie Antoinette. With 'Somewhere' she won the Golden Lion in Venice, then made a satirical crime film ('The Bling Ring'). At the 2017 Cannes Film Festival she was awarded Best Director for 'The Beguiled'.
This movie is adapted from the novel of Thomas P. Cullinan, written in 1966. An other screen adaptation exists already from 1971, starring Clint Eastwood. Sofia Coppola hasn't made any significant changes regarding the narrative and she kept the original names of the characters. What's entirely new compared to the other version is her perspective: we see the whole story from the women's point of view. That makes this film a haunting experience for the public as we see with a very uncomfortable realism what happens if a handsome wounded soldier (Colin Farrell) arrives at a boarding school in Virginia occupied by a bunch of lonely women.

'The Beguiled' is not a monumental and spectacular history-drama, its excellence lies in the precisely elaborated details, the presentation of repressed sensuality and the subtle black humour.
