The 91 years old bachelor Lucky lives in a sleepy little town somewhere in the desert. He is a veteran of the Navy, he wears a cowboy-hat, he is atheist, and his life is all but busy. His days are passing by monotonously, following the same routine: practicing yoga, drinking milk, popping in the grocery shop, smoking a cigarette, drinking coffee, doing crossword puzzle, watching tv, and making occasional phone calls. All is going very well until one day he suddenly collapses in his room.
Medical science has only a short and simple explanation for this: he has grown old. The film is about living our declining years. To place ourselves in the world, and embrace the truth that everything is changing and nothing is eternal on the Earth. Perception, remembrance, reconciliation and fading away: this slow, meditative film is a spiritual journey on the boundary between life and death. It is also John Caroll Lynch's debut as a director and the last performance of leading actor Harry Dean Stanton. Unfortunately he didn't live to see the premiere of the film, after his many memorable performances he moved to the celestial company together with his faithful cowboy-hat and smokey cigarettes.
