'Are you writing a book? I thought we were just having fun?' asks the 8-year-old Christopher Robin from his father. This quote sums up the narrative of this beautifully made, emotional biopic about the writer of Winnie-the-Pooh and his only son.
The adventures of Pooh, Piglet and the others living in the Ashdown Forest have been inspiring children and adults alike ever since the story has been created almost a hundred years ago. The characters' popularity is still unbroken, it's enough to think about the Disney-franchise and all the adaptations that followed the publication of the book. This film is kind of a behind-the-scenes look at the life of the author A. A. Milne, who suffered from depression after the first World War and felt that he couldn't really write any more. The game that started out as a father-son bonding soon became Milne's only inspiration to work, while he was unaware of the fact that he somehow stole the childhood of his son, and that the unexpected success of the Winnie-the-Pooh books may cause many difficulties for the real Christopher Robin.
This film directed by Simon Curtis is a beautiful and thought-provoking biopic about a father and son relationship, but also about creation and the fragile boundaries between fiction and reality.
