Frida Kahlo

Masterpieces from the Museo Dolores Olmedo
Budapest, Magyar Nemzeti Galéria, 06 July 2018 - 04 November 2018
In 2018 we celebrate the 111th anniversary of the famous Mexican painter's birth. It is a much anticipated event as this will be the first Frida Kahlo exhibition in Budapest and it will be mainly based on the collection of the Museo Dolores Olmedo, Mexico City.
Frida Kahlo's life was full of hardships, but when she was confined to bed following an accident which seriously injured her spine, she discovered her affinity to draw and paint. She became the subject of her paintings, creating mainly various portraits of herself. She mixed the reality that surrounded her with the motifs of Mexican folklore. Her works are often like a dream or a nightmare, as she often represented her struggle with her illness but she also boldly expressed sexuality and the joy of life on her paintings. The exhibition features real curiosities like her first canvas painting made in 1927 and also drawings and photographs imbued with symbolic content.
