Memories of social realism in Hungary
Budapest, Átrium Galéria, 20 April 2018 - 20 June 2018
Róbert Alföldi, the artistic advisor of the gallery located in the building of Átrium Theatre, presents this interesting collection of works of art dating back to the communist era. It gives us an insight into what graphic arts were like confined between the borders of social realism.
Those days during the one-party system. The realistic portrayal of reality. Marxism-Leninism, such as the simple people imagined that. Were they really the ones who imagined it? Or was it someone else? Reality, or fictive reality? Realism in socialism: maintained with sword and fire, maintained by all means. An idea. A virtual world. Are those pieces of art really existing now? (Can they be still considered as works of art?) What is that they convey to the spectator today? The exhibition is searching for the answer.
