Danish director Thomas Vinterberg's movie shows the tragic catastrophe of the Russian submarine Kursk and the following negligence of the government, featuring acclaimed stars of international cinema like Matthias Schoenaerts, Léa Seydoux and Colin Firth.
The film follows the 2000 K-141 Kursk submarine disaster at the Arctic Ocean (in which 118 Russian sailors died), and the governmental negligence that followed, provoking the people's wrath throughout Russia. 23 sailors survived the explosions but their oxygen runs out minute-by-minute. As they fight for survival, their families desperately battle political obstacles and impossible odds to save them, as the Russian government refused help from foreign governments for five days before agreeing to accept aid from the British and Norwegian governments.
