The Favourite
1/10 (1)
A spiky love-triangle unfolding in the court of Queen Anne, the last monarch of the House of Stuart. While men battle for power with swords and guns, women have lots of other means when they want to eliminate their rivals.
The latest film of director Yorgos Lanthimos is already hailed as a modern masterpiece by the critics, also thanks to the three brilliant actresses in the leading roles (Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz). 'The Favourite' is not just a boring period drama as it manages to be refreshingly absurd, highly entertaining and unsettlingly contemporary at the same time as it reveals the dark side of power and politics.
Queen Anne is tormented by depression and other ailments, so her childhood friend (and lover) Lady Sarah practically governs the country in her stead. One day Abigail turns up, and as she is a distant cousin of Sarah she decides to take the young woman under her wing. But Abigail is not a simple soul, and using her ambition and wits she soon rises higher and higher in the favour of the Queen, and conflict becomes inevitable between the three women.
