We often associate horrors with darkness, but Ari Aster's latest Swedish folk-horror entitled 'Midsommar' takes place at a sunny, green meadow, featuring a group of beautiful people. And it is still frightening enough to scare you out of your wits.
A bunch of young Americans travel to Sweden. They would like to participate in a local summer folk festival together. At first it seems like a normal festival: sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll (in this case, Swedish folk) but the colorful adventure soon turns into a nightmare. Ari Aster's horror works on many levels, focusing on the drama of a young couple: they were close to splitting up, but a family tragedy kept them together. Dani must deal with the trauma, so she reluctantly joins her boyfriend on this trip. Suddenly the festival takes a sinister turn and what follows is very unnerving and viscerally disturbing at the same time.
