Movies about the mafia can be cool or terrifying, but rarely as boring as this one. Though the plot seems promising: the wives of New York gangsters in Hell's Kitchen continue their husbands' 'work' after they're locked up in prison.
"The Kitchen" is set in the 1970s, in the Upper West Side of New York City, focusing on a working-class Irish-American community ruled by the Westies, a gang with Irish roots that did business with the Italian mob. The story is simple: after they find themselves without money, the wives of three imprisoned gangsters decide to take the reins in their hands. They get used to the taste of power, but the mafia is a masculine world where not everybody likes to be ruled by women. The situation becomes even more complicated when the husbands come back from prison.

Andrea Berloff's directorial debut has many faults in spite of the three excellent actresses, and the message of emancipation becomes too didactic as the movie lacks complex characters and story lines.
