CLARA

The Fashion Queen behind the Iron Curtain
Budapest, Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum, 16 November 2019 - 30 April 2020
The exhibition gives us an insight into the successful career of a woman. Clara Rotschild lived in Hungary during the ambiguous era of socialism: the dressing habits of the local elite are presented with the help of her unique creations.
The name of Clara Rotschild was the synonym of fashion, elegance and luxory for decades. She brought a whiff of Paris to Budapest. She launched her salon between the two world wars, and became very popular soon: she made the wedding dress for the bride of the governor, and even the wife of Cartier admired her creations. After WW2 she could fortunately keep her salon and continue her work: actresses, foreign visitors and wives of diplomats dressed from her salon, but the most celebrated costumers were undoubtedly Jovanka Broz, the wife of Tito (also known as the 'Eastern Jackie Kennedy') and Farah Pahlavi, the wife of the Persian sah.
