"Styx" depicts the transformation of Rieke, a strong woman who has to face the current challenges of our world during a sailing trip. She becomes the only person to come to the aid of a group of refugees shipwrecked on the high seas. By the end she is forced to recognize that only chance can save her.
She is counseled not to go there because that would be dangerous, so she waits for expert help which doesn't seem to arrive. A young boy somehow manages to swim across to her boat, and Rieke finds herself torn between her conscience and her sense of danger. She is left slipping impotently from one nightmare to the next. The film of Wolfgang Fischer has a very simple plot, but it works well as it symbolizes the current European situation: Rieke would like to help but she is aware of the danger too, and she doesn' know how to overcome this dilemma.
