Here comes a new biopic about the author of Frankenstein, starring Elle Fanning. The life of Mary Shelley is more than worthy of a movie adaptation, as she was a revolutionary woman of the XIX century.
Her mother was a feminist writer and young Mary created the most memorable piece of gothic literature when she was hardly 18 years old. Her situation was scandalous at that time, as she lived together with a married man, Percy Shelley. (According to contemporary gossip they used to meet in the cemetery, at the grave of Mary's mother.) Frankenstein has been created in the house of Byron on a stormy day: it was a playful competition between the couple and Byron to see who could write the best horror story. Though all knew that Mary was an aspiring author, they hardly suspected that she would win the competition and create an immortal story. The novel was first published anonymously as Mary had to struggle with prejudice against women: she simply wasn't considered worthy of writing a good book. In fact this film is much less revolutionary than Mary's life, and maybe the two hours run-time is a bit too long for telling the origin of a book, though Elle Fanning does everything in her power to breath some life into the movie.
